Two more Cakes

The first one is for a teacher. Her daughter graduated from college. It was a spur of the moment thing, but turned out nice.

This one is for a different teacher. Her daughters birthday is today and she wanted a miniature wedding cake using her wedding colors, black, white and red. She is getting married in a month. The bottom is a 2 layer 8" round, middle is a 6" round, and then a 4" round. It's all pretty small. The red roses were made weeks ago using fondant. They are itty bitty ;)

Teresa's Birthday Party

Teresa had a great birthday Party on Saturday. Teresa was able to invite 3 friends to solve a birthday mystery with her. I don't have a lot of pictures yet, my mom took the pictures while I took video.

The theme of the party was based off a book Teresa wants to write "The Birthday Mystery". So the cake is part of the series of books, since The birthday Mystery is book 7. We took them to the Market Place where they had to fine 4 familiar people. Each person had a clue, but in order to get the clue the girls had to do something funny. Then they had to decode those clues to give them directions to the next clue. That led them to a chair with gummy worms under it, which led them to the movie posters by the theater, which then took them to Carl's Jr. for lunch. Then on to a gift store to make key chains and then the final clue was a description of Harry Potter, and asked where he might be found. They came up with the the book store and there was the present, it had 4 gift cards in it for the girls to pick out a book. Then we raced back to the house to have cake and ice cream with the family.

The girls were told to come in disguise

Here they are decoding the first clues

Here is the cake

Bus Cake

This one was a challenge, but it still came out cute. Mostly thanks to a friend who sculpted those adorable little people :) This was for a retirement party for 3 custodian/bus drivers at Teresa's school

Basket of flowers cake

Kay and I did another cake together for the teacher who have birthdays in May. It came out pretty cute. I did the flowers a nd bees out of fondant. She baked the cakes and made the frosting, then we took turns doing the basket weaving, it isn't hard, but your hand starts to hurt, it was a 3 layer 10" round cake.

Birthday Cake!

I whipped up a cake last night for some friends of mine. We're getting together for lunch to celebrate (well, they are, I have 2 sick kids today)It's nothing fancy, but cute. It's my exaggerated version of a birthday cake. The candles were made from leftover fondant.

It's just white cake with buttercream frosting lightly flavored with lemon. I don't know how it tastes together, but the frosting was yummy!

Happy Birthday to my Hubby

I made this cake for Jonathan's birthday today. It was really fun. I wanted a cake that didn't look like a cake. It is a yellow 8 in round cake for the bun, covered in chocolate frosting and then fondant. The hamburger patty is a brownie mix baked in an 8 in round pan. All the fixings are made of fondant. The ketchup in the dish is frosting(store bought) and the fries are just pieces of cake cut with my crinckle cut pastry cutter. Don't let the picture fool you, it's not very small

I have to say, it is my favorite so far
I decided to post an after picture to show you some perspective on the size. That's a regular sized knife sitting next to it.

Making a cake

I had this cake I was making and I was really excited about the idea. Mostly because I didn't borrow the idea, and that doesn't happen very often. I also wanted to play around taking pictures with my new lens. So here is a little picture story of my latest cake :)

Just a devil's food cake with buttercream frosting

I had to show you some of the mess

I didn't take pictures of the mess from making the fondant. But here are all the fondant pieces

I used a cool little tool to make the stripes on the sides

With a Happy Birthday on the front

The gift and the hat are cake.

And here is the finished product. It's far from flawless, but I like it. I figure the more I work with fondant the better I'll get :)

Cake!

Just another cake, this time for 2 of the Parent Club ladies. I decided to make it springy, we need some sunny things in our days. Since the sun refuses to show itself.
It's a spice cake with LOTS of cream cheese frosting, chopped walnuts on the sides and (drum roll please! ) plastic flowers ;) I'm thinking this is the way to go, who needs flowers made of frosting, they're just time consuming and no one eats them, nor should they, they're usually made in advance.

Just another cake

I did this cake for the teachers at Teresa's school who had December birthdays. I wrote the names around the pond. The trees are just white chocolate. Nothing fancy :)

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

Here is my cake from my last cake class. It had to be 2 tiered, the rest was up to us. So I chose a fall theme. No, it's not dessert for Thanksgiving, we've already cut into it. It was my first time making chocolate fondant, and it turned out yummy(think Tootsie Rolls).

I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving holiday. We're staying in town and making "grandma's rolls". I'm sure there will be friends and family and movies and games involved too.

Course 2 Cake

I like it, it came out cute. The basket weave isn't nearly as hard as it looked. It does require some practice to make it look awesome, but the basics aren't hard.I don't have a lot of skill in flower arranging, but that too will come with practice.

I found a new recipe for frosting too, it isn't nearly as greasy as
the other stuff I was using. I need to play with the consistency a bit.
I added water and it was still a little too stiff.

On to course 3 :) Fondant and tiered cakes.

(so much cake, must resist! This cake is dark chocolate fudge with mint frosting, I don't know if I can resist that)

Eat Cake!

No really!

This is a cake I made for the teachers at Teresa's school.

The dots and the stars are fondant

I have my last course 2 cake class on Monday. We use all the flowers
we've been making and a basket weave to decorate the cake, in class.
We'll see how that goes, I may or may not post a picture.
And then I get to do 2 halloween cakes for Friday. I'm excited!
I think I'll do a ghost and a mummy.
A lot of practice
